SMSI 2025 Conference

May 6-8, 2025 in Nuremberg Germany

As the only major international sensor and metrology conference, SMSI brings together intelligent sensor technology and instrumentation, digitalization-oriented measurement science with cognitive features as well as modern quantum technology-based metrology including the secure digital exchange of certificates.

This year's conference will take place in Nuremberg from May 6 to 8. On the final day of the conference Paul Bäcker from the department Visual and Inspection Systems will be giving a lecture entitled:

Motion Compensation of Event-Streams for Multitarget Tracking in Sensor-Based Sorting

Session: B6 Event Based Vision
Time: 14:50-15:10

Fraunhofer Vision at Control 2025 - The international trade fair for quality assurance

Mai 6-9, 2025 in Stuttgartt, Germany

The most important international trade event for all topics relating to measuring and testing technology as well as vision technology, image processing and sensor technology is the annual control trade fair in Stuttgart.

Quality assurance with image processing

This time Fraunhofer IOSB presents with the department Visual Inspection Systems the exhibit:

Light Field Inspection-light field based light source for flexible use

In the presented inspection technology, objects with complex geometry are illuminated by a specially adapted "light recipe" in such a way that relevant structures can be detected with maximum contrast. The optimum light field for this task is determined by an algorithm that intelligently adapts the illumination modalities to the individual object geometry. This approach is groundbreaking for a future generation of inspection systems, as here image evaluation and illumination are jointly optimized for the most efficient inspection system possible.

Inspection of (partially) reflective surfaces with deflectometry for quality assurance

However, the inspection of reflective surfaces poses special challenges in practice: On the one hand, most common surface inspection methods, such as fringe projection, rely on diffuse reflection. On the other hand, the results of such methods cannot easily be used to evaluate reflective surfaces, as the customer assesses the quality based on reflections of the surroundings in the surface. The deflectometry method closes this gap in measurement and testing technology and offers the possibility of applying objective standards in quality assurance using simple means.

Referent: Paul Bäcker

Innovation Day Civil Engineering

October 9, 2025 in Karlsruhe

Digitalization, robotics and artificial intelligence for civil engineering and the remediation of landfills and contaminated sites: Fraunhofer IOSB Innovation Day in cooperation with the ROBDEKON competence center - robotic systems for decontamination in hostile environments.

Program preview

  • Automation of construction and logistics
From autonomous construction and work machines to autonomous transport vehicles: we give you an overview of the state of the art and offer you the opportunity to try out our systems live.
  • Material evaluation and sorting
Comprehensive processing of demolition waste can only be successful if the material is optimally evaluated and sorted accordingly. We will show you how this can be done in a highly automated and reliable manner.
  • Digital product passport
The digital product passport is the basis for the traceability of materials and effective reuse of raw materials in the recycling process. We will show you the details of how to implement this important digitalization module.
  • Contributions from research and industry
Find out about the latest research results at first hand and see our solutions in action.

Discuss the future of civil engineering with us and experts from industry and application!

Seminar with practical course - Inspection and characterization of surfaces with image processing (German only)

Dezember 3-4, 2025 in Karlsruhe, Germany

The inspection of surfaces is a classic field of industrial image processing and has been proven in many applications for many years.

Image Processing for Surfaces - Advances in technology not only enable ever higher inspection speeds and more compact systems, but also, in addition to the evaluation of two-dimensionally recorded textures, the complete recording of complex 3D surface structures down to the nanometer range. Furthermore, the rapid evaluation of colored, patterned, transparent, highly reflective or mirroring surfaces is possible. In the seminar, different inspection and analysis methods will be presented for this purpose.

We are involved with the following contributions:

Image acquisition in surface inspection

Thomas Längle

Lightfield technologies

Christian Kludt

3D measurements on surfaces

Michael Heizmann
